Client: Zoku

Zoku has invented a new category within the hotel industry with its home-office hybrid concept and award-winning Zoku Loft.

Zoku is named after the Japanese word for family, tribe or clan. Zoku facilitates international living, working and conscious traveling for the growing population of globetrotting professionals, digital nomads and remote workers.

I developed a Writer-in-Residence project and report.

The project.

The Writer-in-Residence project explores the concept of “hybrid hospitality”, and specifically what it is that Zoku offers that makes it unique.

I was embedded in Zoku Paris for three days, where I documented the experience.

This first-of-its-kind project involved 25 interviews with hotel guests, locals, co-working members and staff.

With a focus on storytelling, this report includes views from a diverse mix of people, including a professional athlete, life coach, online fashion retailer director, local DJ, and even a “Chief Mushroom Officer”.

“At Zoku, we’re always seeking new ways to understand how people connect, collaborate, and thrive in shared spaces. The Writer-in-Residence project allows us to gain authentic insights into the lived experience of hybrid hospitality.

"By inviting a journalist into our world, we hope to deepen our knowledge of how Zoku’s guests find balance and productivity here and to explore new ways to create meaningful connections between our mobile professionals and the local community in the 17th arrondissement.”

The report brings to life the myriad factors that are needed to contribute to successful hybrid hospitality, from more obvious aspects such as natural light and appetising meals, to more intangible ones like open spaces, community, events and “rituals”, among other elements.

The field-research inspired study primarily involved:

1/ Interviews with residents, coworkers, staff, and visitors.

2/ Observations on how shared spaces foster a balanced environment for living, working and socialising.

3/ Documentation on how community events contribute to well-being and shape the overall experience

This first-of-its-kind project had three key objectives:

1/ To research emerging trends in guest stays.

2/ To promote the Zoku brand, focusing on hybrid hospitality.

3/ To produce a range of content for various marketing purposes.
